Sue Ellen Lyons
New Orleans, Louisiana
Since winning the 1996 Education and Outreach Award, Ms. Lyons has continued teaching environmental science, biology, and geology at both the high school and college level.
She and her students recently received a grant to participate in "Coastal Roots," a program in which schools establish nurseries for students to grow and plant wetlands vegetation.
Lyons has collaboarted with other educators to write and publish two education supplements for teachers to use in educating their students on wetlands issues: (1) "Lessons On the Lake: An Educators Guide to the Lake Pontchartrain Basin" - available online here - and (2) "Spirit of the Estuary: Using Art to Teach Ecology of the Barataria-Terrebonne Estuary" - also available online.
Her teaching continues to focus on coastal wetlands loss, restoration of Louisiana's barrier islands, and replanting coastal wetlands. With the education and heightened awareness about storms and wetlands, many of her students and their families left the New Orleans area before Hurricane Katrina's landfall.
