Chester McConnell

Daphne, AL

Photo by Mistie JordanMr. Chester McConnell, 2006 Wetland Community Leader Award Winner, continues to play an active role in his community, primarily by reviewing Corps of Engineers Public Notices and responding to those proposals that would have a significant adverse effect on wetlands.

Recently, he sent a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers Mobile District describing how the proposed Mobile Motor Sports Park near Mobile, AL, would adversely affect approximately 800 acres of wetlands -- the Chickasaw Creek and the Mobile Bay National Estuary. Copies were sent to other conservation organizations and government agencies.

As a result of McConnell's efforts, four conservation groups formed a coalition to relocate the 2,600 acre proposal; the applicant subsequently reduced the facilities and the impacts to 87 acres of wetlands in the Motor Sports Plans. McConnell and the coalition are now requesting that an environmental impact statement (EIS) be prepared on the proposal - if the Corps does not require an EIS, the coalition intends to file legal action.
